Stepping onboard Viking Hlin, one of Viking's Longship-class riverboats, the first thing to strike you is sunlight streaming in through the glass-enclosed, two-story atrium. This allows real flowers to grow, with backlit marble panels, terrazzo floor and wood-and-glass staircase forming the inviting interior. The ship has been designed by Norwegian company Yran & Storbraaten, the same firm behind Seabourn's Odyssey class. Viking Hlin features many innovative features, such as the Aquavit Terrace, two largest suites in Europe, seven true suites, and many cabins with full and French balconies. In order to fit under bridges and through locks, the traditional pointy-nosed bow has been blunted to provide more space. The ship also boasts a number of 'green' features, such as hybrid diesel-electric engines that burn less fuel and produce 20% fewer emissions. There are also solar panels on the sun deck, and the chef maintains an organic garden on the upper deck during growing season.
